8 Tips to Keep Your Dog Cool in Summer
Summer heat can be tough on both us and our dogs, but with these simple tips, you can easily help your pet stay comfortable and safe.
1. Provide Shade and Fresh Water for Your Dog
Always ensure your dog has access to cool, fresh water. Adding ice can help keep it cold for longer. If you have a garden, provide shade with trees or a canopy to allow better airflow.
2. Limit Physical Activity During Heat Peak
Avoid exercise and long walks during the hottest parts of the day. Schedule them for early mornings or evenings. Test the asphalt temperature with your hand before walking—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
3. Use Water to Cool Your Dog
Set up a small kiddie pool in the shade or use a sprinkler to help your dog cool off. If this isn't possible, you can soak a towel in cold water, wring it out, and drape it over your dog for a cooling effect.
4. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car
It's a big NO to leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes. Temperatures inside cars can quickly reach dangerous levels, even with the windows open.
5. Watch for Signs of Heat Stroke
Be vigilant for signs of heat stroke, such as heavy panting, rapid breathing, weakness, vomiting, and dizziness. If you notice these symptoms, move your dog to a cool area, wet them with cool (not freezing) water, and seek veterinary help immediately.
